Low Impact Development

Low impact development (LID) is the practice of using techniques in building and construction that minimize the effect that development will have on the quality of the surrounding environment. LID emphasizes conservation and use of on-site natural features to protect water quality.

LID techniques can be seen all over the Richmond area from residents installing rain barrels for lawn watering and car washing to the upcoming projects to harvest rain water at Capital Square. Minimum effort can yield maximum environmental benefits as well as savings. Although the Richmond City Charter does not allow for residential credits, the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) plans to introduce language to the General Assembly that will allow residential credits in the very near future.
