Insulating Your Crawl Space

60285_139476656097170_2925040_nIf you’re like most people, you don’t think about the crawl space in your home unless you have to. However, this small, dark part of your house may be costing you more money than you realize. Due to uninsulated walls in your crawlspace, outdoor air could be seeping into your home causing your heating and cooling system to work harder than normal in order to keep your home a comfortable temperature.

Spray foam insulation is an easy solution for crawl spaces. Unlike fiberglass insulation, spray foam is able to completely stop the air infiltration that is causing your floors to be colder in the winter and hotter in the summer. By conditioning this part of your home, you’ll be able to remove old you’ll save money on your heating and cooling bills.

Ventilated vs. Unventilated

There are two types of crawl spaces — those that are ventilated and those that are not. Ventilated crawl spaces are typically found in older homes and used when the area is very deep or when there is no ductwork. In these spaces, spray foam insulation is typically applied directly to the floor of the house.

In these types of crawl spaces, spray foam is applied to the foundation walls and band boards. This helps to keep the temperature of the crawlspace consistent and very close to the internal temperature of the house.

By insulating your crawl space, you’ll save your HVAC system from working harder than normal thus saving money on your monthly bills. You’ll also keep a lot of allergens and other irritants from getting into your home’s ventilation system via your crawl space. Clean air, lower costs, and a comfortable home…what else could a person ask for?
