Go Green This Halloween

Halloween can be a tough time to remember to stay environmentally conscious. Between polyester costumes, sugar-filled treats, and who-knows-what in that face paint, it’s hard for those that are trying to maintain a clean, green routine. Here are some tips to staying green this Halloween:

1. Stay away from the Halloween superstore. Convenient? Yes. Environmentally friendly? No. Not only are the costumes themselves filled with dyes and made with materials that can hurt the environment – they most likely feed into unethical working conditions overseas.

2. Wear a costume you already own. What’s old can become new again! Re-using an old costume is a much better option than buying new – and it’s much better for the environment.

3. Buy the candy locally. Look for goodies with minimal packaging and/or those made packaged in recycled materials. Check labels to see that chocolate and sugar are from sustainable sources.

4. Recycle your pumpkins. When it’s all said and done, give your pumpkins back to nature! Learn more about the best way to do this from The National Wildlife Federation.

Enjoy your Halloween, stay safe, and have fun!
