Now that it seems Winter has settled in, here are some tips we put together to help you stay warm during the cold weather.

  1. Make the most of curtains and rugs. Thick curtains can help shield your home from any cold that happens to come through the windows. Rugs laid down over bare floors can help keep you warm and cozy.

  2. Harness the power of the sun. Sunlight is a free energy source. On days when the sun is out in full force, raise up the blinds and let the sunshine in!

  3. Look into updating the insulation in your crawl space. You might not venture into the crawl space of your home often, but it should not be neglected. Having proper insulation in your crawl space can help promote proper air circulation in your home (and lower your energy bills!). Creative Conservation can help with that.

  4. Reverse your ceiling fan’s direction. During the winter, reverse your fan’s rotation to push cool air upward and mix with the rising heat. The mixed air will spread downward, making your home feel warmer.

  5. Flannel is your best friend. Flannel sheets are a wonderful investment in the winter months – use them to stay cozy.

  6. Invest in a programmable thermostat. We already talked about the ideal thermostat setting, but there are other things you can do in addition to that. You can save up to 10 percent a year on heating and cooling costs by using a programmable thermostat. Set your thermostat 7-10 degrees cooler for the hours you’re at work.

  7. When you are home, keep the thermostat at 68 degrees. When it’s really cold outside, that temperature can sometimes feel a little chilly, making it tempting to turn up the dial. Resist the urge so that you can stay energy-efficient all winter long.
