7 Ways to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer

Happy First Day of Summer! We are big fans of this season here at Creative Conservation. Of course, along with fireworks, beach trips, and cookouts come the hot Summer days and humid nights. As the heat settles in for the long haul, keep your home cool with these seven tips:

  1. Keep your blinds closed. Up to 30 percent of unwanted heat comes from your windows, and utilizing shades, curtains and the like can save you up to 7 percent on your bills and lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees.
  2. Regulate your own body temperature. Keep your body cool from the inside out – examples are drinking iced drinks (water, lemonade, tea, etc.) and using a cool rag on your head and wrists.
  3. Use your fans. Turning on your bathroom and kitchen fans will pull out the hot air that comes from showering, the oven, etc.
  4. Grill out. As previously mentioned, Summer is the perfect time of year to have an outdoor BBQ. Using your oven increases the temperature in your home – so cooking outside will minimize the amount of heat in the home.
  5. Invest in long-term energy solutions, such as spray foam insulation. Spray foam keeps the cool air in and the hot air out – and vice-versa in the winter months.
  6. Shade the outside of your windows. You can use an awning, plant a tree outside your window, or purchase a special shade that will let light in.
  7. Mind the doors. Closing off rooms will prevent the cool air from permeating these areas during the hottest part of the day. You’ll want to capitalize on the cooler night hours, too, letting air flow naturally through your home.
